Alright let's talk about shadow and bone. The book not the show, I wish I was reviewing the show because it's waaay better. Don't get me wrong I love Leigh Bardugo, and six of crows is my favourite book of all time, but this wasn't her best work. So let's get started!
The book starts off with Alina, who is way better in the show. In the book I hate her guts. Like girl chill. She is a cartographer and she has a friend who is a soldier: Malyen Oretsev. Everyone hates him so much it's not even funny. Literally darklina shippers will say that Mal is toxic when they stan the darkling.
Look, I don't even like Mal that much, he annoying as well...especially in the second book. But in the show he is awesome.
We are off track. Alina and Mal are assigned to go on a ship the fold - which is are a darkness that divides the country Ravka that has monsters that rip you apart... So that's fun.
In the fold they almost die - so that's more fun - but no worries they are saved by Alina who is a human flashlight now. Just kidding she has light powers and is the only person that can vanquish the fold. So she was taken to the little Palace where were train grisha who are people with powers like Alina.
Along the way there she meets the darkling, a grisha that can control darkness, and a descendent of the original grisha who opened the fold - so it seems...
Everyone there is pressuring Alina that she needs to learn how to control her power, and she is surrounded by fake people that say they want to be friend like Marie and the other girl who I forgot her name. I like that in the show they are trying to be her friend and not speaking shit behind her back.
But there was one person who she does feel comfortable with - Genya! She is an amazing tailor, a grisha that can modify appearance. I love Genya, and David. They're amazing.
Alina is mad that now isn't replying to any of her letters, and finds herself in the arms of the darkling...bestie that ain't the right decision, because right away we find out that the darkling is evil - big surprise, as if we didn't know that from his name - and he is actually the one who opened the fold.
In this moment, I'd like to talk about darklina. The darkling is evil, they are toxic and I don't ship them. End of talk.
Mal finds Alina, blah blah blah they make up and kiss blah blah, and we end up in the end of the book, where the darkling is in the fold fighting Alina and Mal, and guess who wins? Of course Alina, but the darkling isn't dead, and it isn't over.
That's it, and I'll see you next time with a review of Siege and Storm.
